AMAZING PERFORMANCE: Jonah Lomu

I saw Invictus this weekend.  Sports fans will definitely enjoy it.   People that underestimate the value of sports will enjoy the movie too.  The story of the South African victory in the 1995 Rugby World Cup is an important reminder of the ability of sports to bring people together.

Meanwhile, rugby fans will recognize the reverent tones used to describe the Springboks opponent…the mighty All Blacks of New Zealand.  The All Blacks were led by the amazing performance of Jonah Lomu.  When Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela meets Lomu, he says, “I am a little bit afraid of you.”  This clip gives you a good idea of what the Springboks had to fear.

At 6′ 5″ and 262 lbs. Lomu could run 100 meters in under 11 seconds.  This super human performance led Will Carling to make the comment, “He is a freak and the sooner he goes away the better.”
