EAT: Oatmeal

oats*Oatmeal is not a food product.  It is food.  Pick up a can of oatmeal and read the ingredients.  Mine says 100% Whole Grain Rolled Oats.

*Canned pumpkin is the same way.  Ingredient: Pumpkin.

*Mix the two with raisins, walnuts, and honey for a hearty breakfast made from real food.

*Oatmeal is like an off-white canvas welcoming your creativity.  As an example of how creative one can get with oatmeal, try this recipe by Korean-American chef Edward Lee of 610 Magnolia in Louisville (a rocking city).  Since coming across this recipe last month, I have made some new version of it at least once a week and our tub of Korean pepper paste is rapidly diminishing.

  1. A good friend of mine was bitten by a copperhead last night. He is fine and will survive no worse for the wear. However, it got me to thinking about recovery diets. For example, I eat a particular way to aid recovery after a long run.

    Is there a snakebite recovery diet?

      *Copperhead Recovery Diet: 1 shot of Jack from a hip flask while a hand rolled cigarette dangles from your mouth.

      *Diamondback Recovery Diet: A double shot of Woodford Reserve. Then light your Davidoff. You deserve it.

      *Hooded Cobra Recovery Diet: Patient’s choice of Cognac…say hi to God for me.

    Here is a great use of oatmeal. Pour some of it into a cereal bowl, uncooked. Add some cut strawberries. Add 1 or 2 teaspoons of honey and the same amount of skim milk you would use in a bowl of cereal. It is a quick, energy intensive, low cholesterol, and good tasting (the strawberries are the key) breakfast.
